Phrasal verb คืออะไร???                        

Phrasal verb เป็นกลุ่มคำกริยาที่ประกอบด้วย verb + preposition/adverb

เช่น     I ran into my teacher at Centra Pinklao last Sunday. (run + into) = meet = พบ

The man gave up smoking. (give + up) = stop/cancel = หยุด/เลิก

ความหมายของ Phrasal verb จะมีความหมายคงเดิมบ้าง และจะเปลี่ยนไปจากความหมายเดิมอย่างสิ้นเชิง หรือเป็นสำนวนภาษา

เช่น    The price of petrol went up again last Monday.(ราคาน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงขึ้นไปอีกเมื่อวันจันทร์ที่แล้ว)

จะพบว่าความหมายของ  phrasal verb 'went up' (กริยาช่อง 2 ของ 'go up') ยังคงมีความหมายเดิมของคำที่ประกอบขึ้น

The doctor suggest him to give up smoking.(คุณหมอแนะนำให้เขาเลิกสูบบุหรี่)

ความหมายของ 'give up' คือ 'เลิก'ซึ่งเปลี่ยนไปจากความหมายเดิมของคำที่ประกอบกันขึ้น 

Phrasal verb บางคำก็อาจมีความหมายได้หลายความหมายแล้วแต่บริบท

เช่น  drop off

drop off = fall asleep : I dropped off while watching TV last night.(ฉันนอนหลับไปขณะดูทีวีเมื่่อคืนนี้)

drop off = similar to fall : The boys dropped stones off the cliff(เด็กผู้ชายโยนหินลงจากหน้าผา)

drop off = gradually decline/ become less : The sales dropped off at the end of the month(ยอดขายค่อยๆตกลงเมื่่อสิ้นสุดเดือน)

break down 

break down = stop functioning : This machine will break down if you dont take care of it.(เครื่องยนต์จะพังถ้าคุณไม่ใส่ใจดูแล)

break down = lose control of one's emotion : He broke down when he heard of his friend's accident.

(เขาควบคุมอารมณ์ไม่ได้เมื่อทราบข่าวเพื่อนได้รับอุบัติเหตุ)

break down = break something dwon: The survey breaks down the population of Thailand region by region.

(การสำรวจประชากรของประเทศไทยแบ่งไปตามภาค)
