เก่งอังกฤษทำอย่างนี้

2. ประโยคคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย Question words (Wh- Questions) เมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็น Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech ให้ทำดังนี้
- ใช้กริยานำ คือ ask/asked (ถามว่า), inquire/inquired (ถามว่า), wonder/wondered (สงสัยว่า, อยากรู้ว่า),
want to know/wanted to know (อยากรู้ว่า)
- ใช้ Question words เป็นตัวเชื่อม
- เรียงคำในประโยคให้อยู่ในรูปของประโยคบอกเล่า

ตัวอย่าง

a. Direct Speech : They asked, "Who can speak English?"
Indirect  Speech : They asked who could speak English.

(1) ใช้กริยานำว่า asked เพราะประโยคที่มี Direct Speech มีกริยานำว่า asked อยู่แล้ว
(2) ใช้ who เป็นตัวเชื่อม เพราะ who เป็น question word
(3) เปลี่ยน can เป็น could
(4) ข้อความใน Direct Speech เรียงคำอยู่ในรูปของประโยคบอกเล่าอยู่แล้ว คือ ประธาน + กริยา + ……
จึงคัดลอกลงใน Reported Speech ได้เลย

b.Direct Speech : She said to me, "When will Jim go to Japan?"
Indirect Speech : She asked me when Jim would go to Japan.

(1) เปลี่ยนกริยานำจาก said เป็น asked
(2) ใช้ when เป็นตัวเชื่อม เพราะ when เป็น question word
(3) เปลี่ยน will เป็น would
(4) เรียงคำที่เปลี่ยนจาก Direct Speech ให้อยู่ในรูปของประโยคบอกเล่า คือ ประธาน + กริยา + ….……
(จากเดิม will Jim go …..…. เป็น Jim would go ………)

เราต้องจำไว้ว่า การเปลี่ยนประโยคคำถาม (Question) เป็น Indirect Speech
1. แบบที่นำด้วย Question Words
(Who, Whom, What, Which, When, Why, Where, How) ตัวอย่าง
Who are you?
Where do you live?
2. แบบที่นำด้วยกริยาพิเศษ (Special Finites) กริยาช่วย 24 ตัว be(is am are), do, does, has, have, will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, maight, must, need, dare, ought to, used to  ตัวอย่าง
Are you reading this story?
Can you do this?

การเปลี่ยนประโยคคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย Question Words เป็น Indirect Speech
1. เปลี่ยน Said เป็น asked
2. เรียงคำในประโยคหลังคำแสดงคำถามให้เป็นประโยคบอกเล่า
3. การเปลี่ยนแปลง Tense ถือตามหลักที่กล่าวมาของ Statement

ตัวอย่าง

Direct Speech: He said to me, "What is your name?
Indirect Speech: He asked me what my name was.

Direct Speech:"Where are you going?" he said to her.
Indirect Speech: He asked her where she was going.

การเปลี่ยนประโยคคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยกริยาพิเศษ
(Special Finites) เป็น Indirect Speech
1.หลักการทั่วไปเหมือน ซึ่งต้องตอบ Yes หรือ No
2.ใช้คำเชื่อม If , Whether (ใช้คำไหนก็ได้)
ในความหมายว่า "ว่า..หรือไม่" 

ตัวอย่าง

Direct Speech: "Can your sister speak English ?" he said to me.
“น้องสาวคุณพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้หรือ” เขาพุดก้บฉัน
Indirect Speech: He asked me if my sister could speak English.
เขาถามฉันว่าน้องสาวของฉันพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้หรือไม่
หรือ He asked me whether my sister could speak English.

การใช้ If หรือ Whether เป็นคำเชื่อมนี้จะใช้ or not ตามหลังก็ได้
ตัวอย่าง
Indirect Speech: He asked me if she lived there. หรือ He asked me if she lived there or not.
- He asked me whether she lived there or not.
- He asked me whether or not she lived there.
