เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ คือ อะไร (What is biotechnology ?)

          

เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ คือ เทคโนโลยีซึ่งนำเอาความรู้ทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ประยุกต์ใช้กับสิ่งมีชีวิต หรือชิ้นส่วนของสิ่งมีชีวิต หรือผลิตผลของสิ่งมีชีวิต เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ต่อมนุษย์ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการผลิตหรือกระบวนการ ของสินค้าหรือบริการ เพื่อใช้ประโยชน์เฉพาะอย่างตามที่เราต้องการ โดยสามารถใช้ประโยชน์ทางด้านต่างๆ   เช่น ด้านการเกษตร ด้านอาหาร ด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม ด้านทางการแพทย์เป็นต้น

                                                                            นิยามของ เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ   ”การประยุกต์ใช้เทคโนโลยีต่างๆทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์มาใช้กับ ระบบของสิ่งมีชีวิต หรือ สิ่งมีชีวิต หรือ ชิ้นส่วนของสิ่งมีชีวิต เพื่อสร้างหรือปรับปรุง ผลิตภัณฑ์ หรือ กระบวนการ เพื่อมาใช้ประโยชน์เฉพาะด้าน”

ประวัติของ เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ (History of biotechnology)

เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ ที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ของมนุษยชาติก็คือ เทคโนโลยีการหมัก (Fermentation Technology) โดยเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพเมื่อก่อนมักนำไปใช้กับทางด้านอาหารและด้านการเกษตร การค้นพบ โครงสร้างของสารพันธุกรรม หรือ DNA โดยเจมส์ วัตสัน และฟรานซิส คริก ในปี พ.ศ. 2496 ต่อมามีการค้นพบเอนไซม์ตัดจำเพาะในแบคทีเรีย โดยเวอร์เนอร์ อาร์เบอร์ ในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2500-2510 ในปี พ.ศ. 2516 เอนไซม์ตัดจำเพาะนี้ถูกนำไปทดลองใช้ในการทดลองตัดยีนจากแบคทีเรียเซลล์หนึ่ง แล้วนำไปใส่ให้แบคทีเรียอีกเซลล์หนึ่งเป็นผลสำเร็จ โดยแสตนลีย์ โคเฮน และเฮอร์เบิร์ด โบเยอร์ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2520 มีการนำยีนจากสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น (ที่ไม่ใช่ของแบคทีเรีย) ไปใส่ในแบคทีเรียเป็นผลสำเร็จ ซึ่งนำไปสู่การศึกษาค้นคว้าด้านนี้อย่างกว้างขวางจนถึงปัจจุบัน ที่สำคัญมีการตัดต่อยีนของมนุษย์ที่ควบคุมการสร้างฮอร์โมนใส่ลงในเซลล์ แบคทีเรียที่ชื่อ E. coli ซึ่งทำให้แบคทีเรียสร้างฮอร์โมนของมนุษย์ออกมาได้เป็นผลสำเร็จจากสิ่งที่ค้นพบเหล่านี้ทำให้เกิด เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพสมัยใหม่ คือ เทคโนโลยีรีคอมบิแนนท์ดีเอ็นเอ (DNA Recombinant- Technology)หรือ พันธุวิศวกรรม ( Genetic engineering )
