Ramadan

In  1999, Muslims  all  over  the  world  began  their  annual  fast  on  December  9 th.
Fasting,  which  as  one  of  the  Five  Pillars  of  Islam  forms  a  religious  obligation,  means  abstinence  from  food  and  water  from  dawn  to  dusk  and  lasts  the  whole  month  of  Ramadan.

Ramadan  is  the  holy  month  of  fasting,  the  9th  month  of  the  Muslim  lunar  calendar . According  to  Muslim  tradition,  it  was  during  Ramadan  14  centuries  ago  that  the  angel  Gabriel  revealed  the  verses  of  the  Koran  to  the  prophet  Mohammed  at  a  cave  near  the  holy  city  of  Mecca,  in   what  is  now  Saudi  Arabia.

The  beginning  and  end  of  Ramadan  are  announced  when  one  trustworthy  witness  testifies  before  the  authorities  that  a  new  moon  has  been  sighted; 
a  cloudy  sky  may  therefore  delay  or  prolong  the  fast.

According  to  Islam,  all  Muslims are  to  practise  the  Five  Pillars  of  the  faith : (1)  to  recite  the  profession  of  faith   at  least  once  in  one’s  lifetime ,(2)  to  observe  the  five  daily  public  and  collective  prayers,  (3) to  give  zakat (alms)  to  the  poor  and  needy, ( 4 ) to  fast  from  daybreak  to  sunset  during  the  month  of  Ramadan,  and ( 5 ) to  perform  the  hajj  or  pilgrimage  to  the  holy  city  of  Mecca  at  least  once.

On  the  day  of  fasting,  the  adherent  person  wakes  at  sunrise ( about  five  in  the  morning  ) to  have  his  early  meal.  He  does  not  eat  again  till  sunset.
But  it  is  not  just  food or  water  that  a  Muslim   has  to  abstain  from  during  the  day.

He  also  cannot  indulge  in  sexual  activity ,  quarrel  with  anybody,  nor  can  be  vomit  willingly.  A  person  must  also  not  allow  any  form  of  medication  to  enter  his  eyes  or  nose.

Fasting  is  compulsory  for  Muslims  who  have  reached  puberty,  but  there  are  exemptions  for  old  people,  those  in  poor  health,  women  who  are  menstruating,  travellers  on  long  journeys,  and  women  who  have  just  given  birth.

Even  though  Muslims  fast  from  dawn  to  dusk,  the  night  time  is  spent  merrymaking.  They  entertain  family  and  friends  with  traditional  dishes  that  include  nuts,  dates,  meat  and  vegetables.
